Sometimes it’s the look of surprise, followed by immediate grin. Sometimes it’s a look of confusion. Then there are times when the subject knows it’s ‘all about him’ for a few seconds—along with a chance to get a fresh photo for social media use. Regatta race photography is not always serious.

At Saturday’s South Beach YC midwinters we see the Frenchman Patrick—always stylish no matter the conditions. He sends love to the Heart of Gold Crew (my ride for the day’s photo jaunt). In a second pass he zeroes in on me from the sunny side. You see, I’ve flashed him that “I’m watching you” gesture on a few occasions (as well as other cool racers) and he’s dishing it back at me.
